Man dies in crash; another arrested
A 60-year-old Grand Junction man is dead and an Illinois truck driver has been arrested in connection to the death on Interstate 70 on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Jose E. Aragon was taken by CareFlight to St. Mary’s Hospital after being ejected in a rollover crash on the interstate near De Beque. Aragon died of his injuries at the hospital, the patrol said.
A crash between two vehicles occurred after the truck driver, 33-year-old Tinauris C. Wise, of Chicago Heights, Ill., placed emergency cones in the interstate’s right-hand lane of the westbound lane of traffic after his semi broke down.
Wise was arrested and booked into Mesa County Jail on suspicion of criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and obstructing a highway.
A Ford Focus driven by Sharon Diaz of Grand Junction, with Aragon as her passenger, collided with a Subaru Outback driven by Richard Carlson of Rifle.
Aragon was ejected and landed in the eastbound lane when the Focus rolled 1 1/2 times and landed on its roof. Carlson and Diaz were taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital.
Aragon was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the patrol said.
Traffic was stalled for three hours as only one lane of the interstate was open in each direction following the 2 p.m. crash, the patrol said.
