Man jailed, accused of sex with girl, 13
A 21-year-old Grand Junction man remained in Mesa County Jail on Tuesday after allegations he had consensual sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Brandon Stewart was arrested by Mesa County Sheriff’s Department deputies after the girl’s mother said she had been made aware of the relationship between her daughter and Stewart, whom she described as a family friend.
Stewart was “allowed at the house just as if he were one of her children” until she learned of the relationship, the mother told investigators.
The mother was concerned about the “significant age difference” between her daughter and Stewart, according to an affidavit in the case.
The relationship between Stewart and the girl began in May after the girl and her family returned to the Grand Valley after a year-and-a-half absence, the affidavit alleged.
Stewart admitted in text messages sent to a witness, who was being interviewed by investigators at the time, that he was involved in a sexual relationship with the girl, according to the affidavit.
When he was interviewed at the Sheriff’s Department, Stewart said he “felt he had betrayed the friendship and trust” of the family.
Stewart possibly faces three counts of sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse and three counts of sexual assault on a child. The charges could result in sentences of eight years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation.
