Man with handgun robs pharmacy of prescription drugs

A K-9 officer with the Grand Junction Police Department and his dog search for a suspect outside of Rite Aid, 2992 F Road, after the store was robbed at gunpoint about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The robber was described as a white male about 5 feet, 11 inches tall with a medium build and a dark mustache wearing a curly wig, a dark jacket and jeans.

A man wearing an orange wig and holding a handgun robbed a Fruitvale pharmacy of prescription drugs Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident at Rite Aid, 2992 F Road, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

The man fled out the back door with the drugs before authorities arrived and was last seen wearing jeans, a dark-colored coat, a light-colored undershirt and an orange, curly wig.

Porras said a dog from the K9 unit tracked the man’s trail before the losing the scent, leaving officers to believe he likely got into a vehicle and left the area.

The white man was between 35 and 45 years old, about 5 feet 11 inches and had a medium build, Porras said.

About 10 cars were in the store’s parking lot after the incident. Nearly a dozen customers showed up to the pharmacy at 5 p.m. only to be turned away because of the robbery investigation.

School was dismissed at Fruitvale Elementary, 585 30 Road, before the robbery, but Porras said officers in the area still warned anyone left at the school and in the area surrounding the store at the intersection of 30 Road and F Road to be on the lookout for the suspect.
