Man’s body recovered after hikers report it on plateau

Mesa County Search and Rescue personnel recovered a man’s body Thursday from the Uncompahgre Plateau.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said the team of four set out around 9 a.m. at the Dominguez Canyon trailhead to locate and recover the body.

A group of hikers in the area Wednesday afternoon spotted the body about one mile into the Dominguez trail, on top of the Uncompahgre. Deputies who responded to the area Wednesday called off a recovery effort because of darkness.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the man’s name, along with cause and manner of death, today.

Benjamin said the case is being treated as an unattended death, and investigators believe the body is not associated with any missing-persons report.
