Marine waives hearing on sex-assault charges

A Marine Corps sergeant waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday morning on charges related to an alleged sexual relationship he had with a 14-year-old girl.

Jonathan Douglas Roy, 23, of Lochbuie appeared briefly before Mesa County District Judge Thomas Deister. Roy is free on $75,000 bond and was represented Monday by Denver attorney James Scherer.

Roy may enter a plea at his next scheduled court appearance in August.

Roy, a decorated Iraq war veteran assigned to Buckley Air Force Base, is charged with sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse. Roy met the girl in September 2008 during Grand Junction’s Air Show, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The girl told investigators that she met Roy, who is married, at least four times for sex at Grand Junction-area hotels.
