Maverick swim team dominates

Colorado Mesa University’s swim team dominated its own invitational Sunday at El Pomar Natatorium.

The men swept three event finals and scored a whopping 1,512.5 points.

The University of Colorado’s club team was second with 801.5 points, followed by Metro State (261) and Adams State (124).

The Mavericks’ women’s team won easily, scoring 984 points to Colorado’s 712. Western State was third with 419, followed by Adams State (369) and Metro State (297).

Mesa took the top three places Sunday in the men’s 100-yard butterfly, won by Zach Andregg in 52.50 seconds. The Mavericks did even better in the 50 free, taking the top seven places and nine of the top 12, scoring 120.5 team points in that event alone.

Kirk O’Connell had the winning time of 21.94, touching out teammate El Hozzaz Mahdi, who clocked a 21.97.

All six spots in the men’s 400 individual medley finals were taken by CMU swimmers, with Alek Anderson winning in 4 minutes. 31.80 seconds. In all, the men’s team won 17 of 19 swimming finals.

Brock Martin won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving titles. Only Colorado’s Alex Bisping won a men’s swim final on Sunday, claiming the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.78.

Mesa used its depth and versatility to run away with the men’s title, with a different swimmer winning each final on Sunday.

Brett Lowe won both breaststroke titles, claiming the 100-yard race on Saturday and the 200 on Sunday.

In the women’s meet, the Mavericks won 10 of 19 swimming events, plus both diving events. Amanda Jennings won the 3-meter title, with teammate Savannah Craft winning the 1-meter event after placing second in the 3-meter finals.

Kelly Hogan was a double event winner Sunday, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:59.84, then the grueling 1,650 free in 19:36.45. She also led off the Mavericks’ winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Colorado Mesa won every relay in both the men’s and women’s meet.
