Mavericks have lead at Tiara Rado



It’s setting up to be a good final round today in the Maverick Spring Invitational women’s golf tournament at Tiara Rado Golf Course.

Three strokes separate the top three placers, and there’s only one stroke between the leaders.

Regis University’s Nicole Hulbert shot a 4-over-par 75 on Monday. She leads Jennifer Hilts of Colorado Mesa by one stroke heading into today’s final round, which starts at 9 a.m. at Tiara Rado. Two more shots back is CSU-Pueblo’s Trisha Vinci.

Hilts and Hulbert both shot 39 on the front nine, with Hulbert carding a 36 and Hilts a 37 on the back.

The Mavs lead the team race at 324, with CSU-Pueblo second at 332 and Regis third at 335.

Jessica Berve is also in contention for the Mavericks after a first-round 80 and is in fourth place. Afton Balling is tied for fifth at 82, Alisa Lindsay tied for eighth with an 86 and Michelle Stripp is tied for 12th at 88.

Men’s Golf

Brandon Bingaman again shot the low round of the tournament, this time a 6-under-par 66, during Monday’s final round of the DQ Wolf Pack Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo.

Bingaman finished in third place, four strokes behind Jim Knous of Colorado School of Mines, who won a playoff over CSU-Pueblo’s James Berry after both carded identical rounds of 67, 69 and 70 for a 206.

The Mavs finished third behind Mines and CSU-Pueblo, shooting a third-round 284 for an 864 final score. Mines placed three golfers in the top five to finish at 845 and CSU-Pueblo finished at 861.

Colorado Mesa freshman Matt Weiss tied for ninth at 216.
