Mavericks top Colorado Christian in soccer

Colorado Mesa University’s men’s soccer team broke out of a season-long goal slump last weekend, and the Mavericks carried that momentum into Friday.

Brandon Burton and Stevie Palma each scored a goal in Mesa’s 2-0 victory over Colorado Christian in Lakewood, the Mavs’s second straight win.

Jeremy Gwerder sent a pass to Burton nearly 38 minutes into the game for Burton’s first goal of the season, and only five minutes into the second half, Palma scored off a corner kick for a 2-0 lead.

That was enough for the defense, which turned away Colorado Christian’s four shots, only two of which were on goal. The Mavericks peppered the Cougars’ defense with 21 shots, six on goal.

Women’s Soccer

Colorado Mesa scored the first two goals of the game early in the second half, but couldn’t keep CSU-Pueblo at bay in the final minutes, tying 2-2 in overtime.

Kaselyn Butters and Sara Islas scored in the second half, but the Thunderwolves scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation to tie the game.

The final goal came off a free kick with only 47 seconds left to play. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.

Despite having more kills than New Mexico Highlands, the Mavericks couldn’t put games away, falling 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23 in Las Vegas, N.M.

Kelly Regimbal had 18 kills, Rebecca Sellers 10 and Antoinette McCormick nine for the Mavericks (5-10, 1-5 RMAC).

The Mavericks gave away 20 points on serving errors, costing them the match.
