Mavs add Franc Cook to men’s lacrosse coaching staff

Vince Smith joined the Colorado Mesa men’s lacrosse coaching staff during the past season to improve the offense.

The Mavericks scored a school record 140 goals (11.67 per game) in the program’s fourth year. Mesa finished 9-3 overall and 5-1 in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association play.

Shortly after the season, Smith was promoted to head coach.

On Wednesday, he hired his new assistant, Franc Cook, to coach the defense.

Cook spent the past two seasons as the assistant lacrosse coach/defensive coordinator at NCAA Division III Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Cook also coached club programs in the area.

He played goalie at Lynchburg (Virginia) College, where the team was 50-15 with Cook as its starter. He was a two-time All-American and two-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference goalie of the year.

“His experience as a coach at Arcadia and as a player at Lynchburg will serve him well in his role here at Colorado Mesa,” Smith said in a news release. “Franc’s knowledge of goalie play, the defensive side of the ball and his rapport with student-athletes make him a great fit for our program. We are looking to Franc’s arrival so we can get started.”

Smith took over for AJ Stevens, who was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Emerging Sports. Stevens was 31-21 in four seasons as the head coach.
