Mavs’ cross country team wins small-school title at CU
Four Mesa State College women’s cross country runners placed in the top 11 to lead the 15th-ranked Mavericks to the Rocky Mountain Shootout non-Division I team title Saturday in Boulder.
Mesa State scored 33 points. Metro State placed second with 62 and Black Hills (S.D.) State was third with 79.
Alexis Skarda led Mesa State with a first-place finish in 21 minutes, 43 seconds in the 5.8-kilometer race. She finished eighth overall including Division I competition. Kelsey Follett was fourth in the non-Division I race (15th overall) in 22:21. Esmeralda Martinez-Ramos took seventh in 22:53, Paula Hogue was 10th in 23:09 and Brooke Bosman finished 11th in 23:37.
The University of Colorado took first in the Division I with 15 points, followed by Wyoming, Northern Colorado and Air Force.
Doubles teams fall in semifinals
Two Mesa State College doubles teams lost in the semifinals Saturday in the ITA Central Regional tournament in Kearney, Neb.
Niko Carrizo and Rashad Khamis, the fourth-seeded team in the doubles draw, lost to Metro State’s top-seeded team of Scott Bradley and Georgie Perez 8-3 after defeating Nebraska-Kearney’s Rodrigo Duncan and Noriaki Naruse 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza, seeded third, won their quarterfinal match against Chad Berger and Marco Vazquez of Minnesota State-Mankato 8-3, but then lost to the second-seeded team of Yair Banuelos and Kyle Lynch of Western New Mexico 8-6.
Matt Searle won a consolation bracket by winning four pro-set matches Saturday, with an 8-3 victory over Devin Stroman of Western New Mexico in the finals.
