Mayer, former college president, dies at 82
Dr. Dennis “Denny” Mayer, a just-retired chairman of the Colorado National Monument Association, died Dec. 2. He was 82 years old.
Mayer, also a former president of Colorado Mountain College and of Mount San Jacinto College in Hemet, Calif., “was a visionary board member for the Colorado National Monument Association, monument Superintendent Joan Anzelmo said.
After the completion of his term as chairman of the association, he was made the honorary chairman of the Colorado National Monument Centennial Celebration.
“He was so hoping to be with us throughout the centennial,” Anzelmo said. “He had a spectacular smile, dancing eyes that reflected his big brain and a wry sense of humor.”
The centennial will be marked on New Year’s Eve with a fireworks celebration. The monument was designated in 1911.
Mayer also was a member of Rotary International in Colorado and California and sat on United Way boards, Grand Junction Newcomers Club, Grand Valley Book Club, Reader’s Fest, and the Craig Discussion Group.
He and his wife, JoAnne, have a son, Dave, of Encino, a daughter, Kim Chirdon of Fruita; a brother, Lyle, of Denver; and four granddaughters.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Canyon View Vineyard Church.
