Medicare recipients saved on drugs, preventative care in ‘11

The average Colorado Medicare enrollee saved $561 in prescription drug costs so far this year, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The 29,186 Coloradans with Medicare drug coverage this year saved nearly $16.4 million on prescriptions in the first 11 months of 2011. As of the end of November, 260,715 Coloradans with Medicare received preventative health care for free.

Preventative care coverage and discounts on prescription drugs through Medicare are part of the Affordable Care Act.

The Medicare enrollment period for 2012 coverage ended Wednesday. The Medicare Part B deductible for non-hospital health care next year will be $22 less than the 2011 deductible.  Part B premiums are expected to increase by $3.50 a month for most Part B plan-holders in 2012.

Medicare Advantage premiums are expected to drop 4 percent in 2012.
