Meeker girls in 2A semifinals; Akron player sets state record in win over Meeker boys

The Meeker High School girls basketball team advanced to the Class 2A State Tournament semifinals with a 52-47 win over Akron today.
Top-seeded Lutheran defeated Paonia 54-37 to also move into the semifinals where they will face Meeker. The Lutheran-Meeker game is set to tipoff Friday at 7 p.m.
The Meeker boys lost to Akron, 81-64 in the first round this afternoon.
The game was highlighted by high-scoring Brady Baer, who finished with 40 points. The Akron senior became Colorado’s all-time leading scorer in the game. He now has 2,562 points in his career to break the old mark of 2,551 set by Brian Wood of Buena Vista from 1997-2001.
The Meeker boys and Paonia girls still have a shot at fifth place after dropping into the consolation brackets.
Ignacio, the No. 1 seed in the boys bracket, opened with a 49-33 win over Sedgwick County 49-33 to advance to the semifinals.
The 2A tournament is being held on the CSU-Pueblo campus.
