Meeting in Montrose today will reveal findings about EXTRA Aircraft

MONTROSE — The Montrose County Commission this afternoon will reveal the findings of a study about EXTRA Aircraft, a German-based aviation company that chose Montrose as the city where it wants to manufacture its light aircraft.

The commission is hosting a special meeting at 2 p.m. at Friendship Hall, 1001 N. Second St. in Montrose

In July the county commission hired Boyd Group International, an Evergreen-based air industry consulting company, to look into EXTRA Aircraft and its plans to build a large-scale manufacturing operation in Montrose. The facility would be EXTRA’s first in the United States with plans to build two or three models of high-performance turbo-prop aircraft. The company announced plans to hire up to 220 workers from the local work force to build the aircraft.

The commissioners are deciding whether to provide the aircraft company with incentives to put the company in Montrose. Representatives of Boyd Group will be on hand to answer questions.

According to Sandy Head, director of the Montrose Economic Development Corporation, since EXTRA’s announcement in Montrose in July, the company has received many manufacturing orders from primarily U.S. customers to build the custom-made planes.
