Meeting today on education standards

The Colorado Department of Education will seek public comment today on revised draft academic standards for the state’s preschool through high school students.

The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at Doubletree Hotel, 743 Horizon Drive.

Following the 2008 legislative session, the state began reviewing content standards for pre-kindergarten through 12th- grade students.

The first phase of the review will be of math, music, reading, writing, communication and science standards. The tentative new content standards can be viewed at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeassess/UAS/DraftStandards.html.

The next phase of standard revision will look at civics, economics, geography and history standards. The third phase will review standards for dance, health, physical education, theater, visual arts and world languages. More meetings across the state will follow as each phase moves forward.

The state board of education will adopt new academic standards before December.
