ROCKY FORD — Hot, dry weather across the Lower Arkansas Valley this summer has paid off for melon growers, who are reporting an unusually sweet crop of cantaloupe and watermelon.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that Rocky Ford cantaloupe growers are reporting heavy demand and the best crop in years.

The melon season usually stretches from the latter part of July through September.
