Mesa County Fair turns 125

Mesa County’s past, present and future will meet head-on at the 125th Mesa County Fair, opening Tuesday, July 17, and continuing through Saturday, July 21, at the Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50.

With the theme “Celebrating 125 Years Past Present Future” this year’s fair will be packed with 4-H and open class exhibits, shows, concerts, entertainment, food, booths, contests and competitions, carnival rides, rodeo events, mutton bustin’ for the little ones, and the list goes on.

And the fireworks show “is a go,” according to a recent news release from the Mesa County Fair Board. Look for them at 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, weather and fire conditions permitting. There will be cake to celebrate and the Grand Junction Centennial Band will perform during the firework show.

New this year is the Grand Junction Weed Rodeo from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Be one of the first 150 children or adults to bring in a full trash bag of weeds from your property and receive a free “Pulling for Colorado” insulated lunch bag and a pass to the fair, fully transferable and good for any time after your weed drop off (one free lunch bag and pass per person). “The Pulling for Colorado” booth will offer chances to win gift cards, have your mystery plants identified and get advise on how to manage weeds from Master Gardeners and the Tamarisk Coalition.

Scheduled fair concert headliners are Lipbone Redding at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17; Firefall, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18; Bellamy Brothers, 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19; Carlos Washington & Steel Horse, 9 p.m. Friday, July 20; and The Williams Brothers, 9 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Take chairs or a blanket for the concerts.

The popular car crunching demolition derby is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and seating is limited. To participate in the derby, you must preregister by calling 256-1531. Entry in the demolition derby is limited to the first 40 paid entries.

Advance tickets to watch the demolition action cost $12 for ages 2 and older and can be purchased at City Market stores.

Daily admission to the fair is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for children ages 12 and younger. Children age 2 and younger are free. Download $1 off coupons at
