Mesa County is looking for more locations where voters can turn in ballots for the 2014 gubernatorial election, said Catherine Lenhart, county elections director.

Mesa County will establish six polling centers where an estimated 10,000 voters are expected to drop off mail-in ballots two weeks in advance or use a voting machine on Election Day, Nov. 4, Lenhart said.

Roughly 80 percent of Mesa County voters mail in their ballots. The remainder drop their ballots off at polling centers or use voting machines, she said.

Of the six polling centers for 2014, four will be located at:

■ Goodwill Industries, 630
24 1/2 Road

■ Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50

■ Mesa County Central Servies Building, 200 S. Spruce St.

■ Lincoln Park Barn, 910 N. 12th St.

Two more sites are needed, one for Fruita, the other for Clifton. Unlike 2013, Clifton Community Center and Fruita Public Library are not available this year, Lenhart said.

“We need a Fruita and Clifton voting location from Oct. 18 through Nov. 5, which includes setup and tear down,” Lenhart said.

Because a 2012 law requires polling centers to be open for two weeks prior to Election Day, schools and churches are no longer willing to host sites, she said.

The Mesa County Elections Division of the Clerk and Recorder’s office is asking local businesses and nonprofit organizations in the Fruita and Clifton areas to consider hosting a site.

The sites should have about 1,000 square feet with adequate parking from Oct. 18 through Nov. 5. The facility will need to be accessible for people with disabilities. Reasonable rent for the months of October and November will be considered, the county said in a news release.

Please choose sites that are comfortable for all voters to be in - not a bar, church, synagog, etc. Rec center? Library? Public buildings would be best.
