Mesa lacrosse team picked to win WILA title

Colorado Mesa University is a slight favorite to win the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, according to the preseason coaches poll.

It is the first-ever preseason coaches poll for the third-year league.

The Mavericks (9-4, 6-2 WILA) received two of the four first-place votes.

Colorado Mesa won the 2012 WILA title on a tiebreaker over Dominican (Calif.) University. Both teams were 6-2 in the WILA last season.

Dominican received one first-place vote and was picked second. Adams State received the other first-place vote and was picked third. Inaugural WILA champion Notre Dame deNamur was picked fourth.

Lindenwood (Mo.) University joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The Lions were third last year.

The Mavericks have five players on the preseason All-WILA team. They are junior midfielder Kade Robinson, junior defender Johnny Nitti, junior goalkeeper Brad Brandenburg, sophomore long stick midfielder Zach Bullett and junior midfielder/faceoff specialist Jeremy Best.

Robinson, Nitti and Brandenburg were first-team All-WILA selections last season.

Adams State has four preseason All-WILA selections. Dominican as three, and Notre Dame deNamur has one.
