Mesa State athletic facilities receive lofty upgrades
Mesa State College alumni don’t have to be gone for very long to notice the changes on campus.
In addition to the new dorms, Saunders Fieldhouse is in the midst of undergoing a $40.8 million renovation and is the Daily Sentinel’s No. 8 story of the year for 2008.
The project began in earnest last year and is expected to be completed by this time next year. Several athletic facility construction projects were completed in the past two years — a parking garage, Walker Field, a new softball field and a 50-yard synthetic grass football practice field.
The basement of Saunders Fieldhouse is near completion with new locker rooms for each intercollegiate athletic program.
The renovated fieldhouse will include a human performance laboratory, a new natatorium and wrestling room. Saunders will house the growing health science department and nursing department.
The coaches offices will be relocated from the front of the building to the back upstairs corner and the intercollegiate weight room will be moved to the basement.
Brownson Arena will get a face-lift as well. Seat backs are planned for the West bleachers and suites may be added above the bleachers on the same side.
