Mesa Top Trail to be expanded
In an effort to further develop the mountain bike trail system atop Grand Mesa — which with cooler temperatures draws more and more visitors as the summer heat in the lower Grand Valley builds — local trails advocates are leading two volunteer trail-building days this weekend.
Leaders with the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association will meet at 8:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at a staging and camping area near the Mesa Top Trail, which the group plans to extend about 1/2 mile this weekend. The new section of trail will connect Mesa Top to Greenwood Road.
The more than 4 miles of the Mesa Top Trail winds along the southern rim of Grand Mesa, with great views of the San Juan Mountains and the Gunnison Gorge, according to COPMOBA’s Kris Cox.
The staging and camping area can be reached by driving Colorado Highway 65 to Lands End Road, heading west to a left turn on Flowing Park Road (FS 109), then another left on Greenwood Road. The staging site is nearby and will have COPMOBA signage.
Work is expected to happen until 3 p.m. Saturday, followed by a barbecue, and finishes around noon on Sunday.
Volunteers should bring their own food apart from Saturday’s barbecue, water, work gloves and clothes, a hat, sunscreen, bug repellant and rain gear.
