Mesa State student contracts swine flu

Mesa State College officials confirmed Wednesday that a college student has contracted the H1N1 influenza virus.

A second student also claims to have been infected with swine flu, although the college has not received any medical confirmation about that, said John Marshall, Mesa State’s vice president for student services.

Marshall said the student with the confirmed case has been sick for several days but is “on the mend.” Both students live off campus.

No other information about either student was released.

“This doesn’t change a lot for us in the sense that we’re very actively working with faculty, staff and students and making sure they are taking precautions, they’re doing the right things, they’re monitoring for symptoms,” Marshall said.

He said college officials are communicating regularly with students and faculty through internal, online posts and encouraging them to report illnesses to the college Department of Health Sciences.
