Mesa’s Keating will kick in Cactus Bowl
Jared Keating figured he’d get a chance to kick in a postseason game this year.
Although the Mesa State College football team didn’t qualify for the postseason, the senior kicker from Cody, Wyo., isn’t done kicking just yet.
Keating told The Daily Sentinel he received an invitation Wednesday to kick in the Valero Cactus Bowl on Jan. 9, 2008 in Kingsville, Texas. The official announcement has not been made.
“I’ve been waiting for four weeks for this to come out,” Keating said. “I’m so stoked. There will be a lot of publicity, but I just want to go and kick. My leg is feeling 100 percent. It feels great.”
Keating, a D2Football.com preseason All-American, made the All-RMAC first team and the Daktronics All-Region 3 second team. He made 15 of 18 field goals, including a long of 52 yards, this season and scored 73 points.
The Cactus Bowl is an All-Star game for NCAA Division II players. Several pro scouts attend the game.
Mesa State’s Kurt Kissner played in the game last year, Joe Krile and Art Berlanga in 2006 and Ben Steele in 2001. James Bracey played in a similar Division II all-star game in 2002.
Several former and current NFL players have participated in the Cactus Bowl, including
former Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith, offensive lineman Adam Timmerman and receiver James Thrash.
