Andrew Masdon, walked into GJPD headquarters with “meth” backpack.

A 29-year-old suspected drug manufacturer, carrying a backpack full of ingredients to make methamphetamine, walked into the Grand Junction Police Department lobby Thursday to turn himself in.

Saying he “needed help,” Andrew Nolen Masdon, 29, 555 Ute Ave., sat down with officers for nearly 30 minutes to talk in detail about where and how he manufactured meth because he “wanted to turn himself in,” according to Masdon’s arrest affidavit.

Masdon told officers he moved between Alabama and Grand Junction frequently but has been here since April 3.

Since returning to Grand Junction, he has had “six cooks” in the area, producing 4.6 grams to half an ounce in each “cook,” depending on how many boxes of Sudafed he used, the affidavit said.

Masdon told officers he manufactured with the “one pot” or “shake and bake” method, “cooking” twice in a moving vehicle, twice in a trailer at Candlewood Trailer Park, once in a Grand Junction apartment and once in a Clifton storage unit.

Masdon said his last “cook” was May 17 or 18.

Officers asked to search Masdon’s backpack, which the Grand Junction man allowed. The backpack contained one bottle of Crystal Heat Drain Cleaner, numerous coffee filters, rubber gloves, two lengths of plastic tubing, one large container of Morton salt and two-and-a-half face masks.

Masdon told officers in the affidavit that if he had not turned himself in Thursday he would have continued to make meth.

Masdon was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
