Mikolai victorious

Congratulations to Palisade resident and local Public Television official Greg Mikolai. He defeated fellow Palisade resident Rose Femia Pugliese in the race for the District E seat on the Mesa County Valley School District 51 Board of Education.

Mikolai ran a straightforward campaign, concentrating on dealing with the school district’s budget problems while running as an advocate for maintaining as many resources as possible in the classroom.

It may be that many voters were also supportive of Mikolai because he has lived in this area far longer than Pugliese, and he has children in the school district while Pugliese doesn’t. Additionally, Mikolai’s wife is a part-time teacher in the district, giving him more contact with teachers in the district.

But both Mikolai and Pugliese ran upbeat, issues-based campaigns, and avoided personal attacks. We applaud both of them for entering a race that at first attracted no candidates. And we congratulate Greg Mikolai. We trust he will work hard and represent the people of this school district well on the school board.
