Mikolai wins school board race

Greg Mikolai said he was “a little awestruck” to learn he won the School District 51 Board of Education race Tuesday night.

He said he expected the news to sink in after a few hours, and then he’d get ready to buckle down and become one of the fold.

“I think the big thing right now is the budget process,” he said.

The 2009-10 school district budget will be re-adopted by the end of the year, and 2010-11 budget discussions already have begun.

“I think any pet issues are best tabled until after the budget,” Mikolai said.

Mikolai defeated Rose Femia Pugliese 8,808 votes to 7,515 votes, or 54 percent to 46 percent, according to unofficial results posted at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Pugliese said her interest in education remains despite the setback.

Shortly after the race’s result became clear, she and three school board members discussed possible school district committees she could serve on.

“A lot of my ideas I had, I can do as a community member,” she said. “I’d like to be involved as quickly as possible.”

Incumbent school board members Harry Butler and Leslie Kiesler were re-elected to the school board Tuesday.

Each ran unopposed and will serve another eight years on the board.

Mikolai will be sworn in as a school board member later this month.
