Broadway Elementary students on rise
• Students at Broadway Elementary School have exposure to the sport of climbing, thanks to a multi-year collaborative effort by staff, parents and community members.
The climbing wall, which is in the gym, is a couple of weeks old, said physical education teacher Lisa David, but the project is a few years in the making.
The climbing space spans a wall in the gym and is over a mural of the Grand Valley painted by a parent and student volunteer.
Church works on replacing steeple
• St. Joseph Catholic Church is without a steeple.
A project is under way to replace the roof and revamp the steeple to the church at 230 N. Third St. Construction crews have finished removing the old roofing material in preparation for the replacement.
The steeple will be behind lock and key in a makeshift fence behind the church along Grand Avenue until the new roofing material is added and it can be joined back on top of the church.
Flying high for real and for play
• Even when Scott Woolston is on the ground, he really isn’t.
Woolston has been a pilot for seven years and flies commercially for United Express out of Grand Junction Regional Airport.
Although Woolston can’t be miles above the ground all the time, model planes that he built can soar a few dozen feet, at least.
“My mom got me into this,” said Woolston, while maneuvering a foam plane by remote control. “She had a plane made of balsa wood, and I thought, ‘That’s pretty cool.’ ”
Woolston and fellow model enthusiast Andy Schoenfeld spent Monday morning practicing aerial maneuvers above Canyon View park, occasionally scaring flocks of birds with Woolston’s plane, which runs on two cell phone batteries, he said.
