Montrose officers seek yellow Lab’s shooter; 2nd dog still missing

A yellow Labrador retriever named Bella suffered a gunshot wound that appeared to enter the top of her head and exit near the dog’s jaw. She was found Tuesday in Olathe and has been returned to her owners. She is expected to fully recover. The Montrose County Sheriff’s Department is asking for any tips that might lead to the shooter.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Department still is seeking the person or persons who shot a dog in the head at close range.

Bella, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador, who was found Tuesday after crawling out of canal in Olathe near Amber and 60.00 roads, is expected to make a full recovery and has been returned to her owner, Montrose County spokeswoman Katie Yergensen said.

“They were beyond overjoyed,” she said.

The dog’s owner, whose name has not been released to the media, still is looking for another one of their dogs that ran away with Bella, Yergensen said.

Yergensen said the Sheriff’s Department is interested in locating the shooter in the case because of the nature of the dog’s injuries.

Photographs provided by the Sheriff’s Department show the bullet appeared to enter through the top of the dog’s head and exit near the dog’s jaw.

“We are still asking for any kind of tips or advice,” Yergensen said.

Potential charges a suspect may face would include animal cruelty, which is a misdemeanor, she said.
