Montrose council OKs revised districts

MONTROSE — The Montrose City Council unanimously approved new boundaries to the city’s four voting districts Tuesday.

The boundaries were adjusted according to 2010 census data instead of using the prior redistricting method, which was based on the number of building permits issued within the city.

District four, in the southeast portion of the city, was affected the most because home construction in that area declined, according to Eric Svensen, the city’s Geographic Information Systems coordinator.

Svensen said using census data makes the new boundaries much more representative, and boundaries should not need revision for some time.

In other action from Tuesday’s council meeting:

The council appointed Melanie Kline and Ralph Walchle to the board of the Downtown Development Authority. They will work with new DDA Director Scott Shine, a former city planner who begins his duties July 31 for a term of one year.

During discussion, Mayor Kathy Ellis read a letter from the Montrose County Commission expressing its disapproval of Councilman Bill Patterson serving as the council’s representative to the Montrose Airport Advisory Board because of Patterson’s ongoing involvement in the airport’s litigation against JetAway Aviation.

Patterson then asked Thomas Smits, who serves as the council’s representative to the Montrose Economic Development Corporation board, if he wanted to switch board positions with him. Smits agreed, and the council unanimously approved Smits for the airport board, while Patterson was approved to the MEDC board by a 3–2 vote.
