Montrose pair ticketed for abandoning 15 cats

The Montrose Police Department ticketed a Montrose couple for abandoning 15 cats, some in poor health, in a trailer home after the couple moved out.

At 12:08 p.m. Tuesday, management of Ikies Trailer Park, 1308 E. Main St., contacted officers to report Julian Gallegos, 54, and Bridget Gallegos, 55, moved out of a rental home and left 15 cats to fend for themselves.

According to Montrose Police Department Cmdr. Gene Lillard, officers said the animals appeared to have no adequate shelter, and some were in poor health.

“The conditions were not very good at all,” Lillard said.

Lillard said a veterinarian evaluated the cats, and the healthy ones were taken to the Montrose Animal Shelter and will be put up for adoption. Lillard said the cats in poor health could be euthanized.

The couple was issued a summons for cruelty to animals and lack of adequate shelter and veterinary care after officers tracked them down at a different location.
