Montrose soup kitchen finds more space

MONTROSE — Christ Kitchen, a faith-based nonprofit organization that serves free meals to homeless, low-income and senior citizens will move to a new location May 2.

The organization is renovating a former restaurant building at 2305 S. Townsend Ave in the Penn Center Mall.

“We pretty much have outgrown the space and decided months ago we needed a bigger location,” said Sharyn Bennett, board president of Christ Kitchen.

For more than five years, the kitchen has served food from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays.

Last month, the kitchen served about 2,000 people, an all-time high, according to Bennett.

The previous four months had an average of 1,800 people per month, an amount that strained the kitchen’s small facilities and overcrowded its parking areas.

Bennett said the kitchen serves about 100 meals each day, and the new, larger location will be able to serve double that.

Bennett said the kitchen primarily served homeless and elderly residents when it opened. The demographic has changed to include low-income families and minimum-wage workers who use the kitchen to offset food costs.

“We have seen a complete shift in the people we serve,” Bennett said.

Donations of food, money and volunteer hours have kept the kitchen open, Bennett said. For example, the Mexican American Development Association allowed the kitchen to use its space rent-free.

Meanwhile, contractors are volunteering time and materials to save money on the renovation of the new site.

According to Bennett, 56 percent of the funding it receives goes toward the meals, 39 percent toward supplies and operating expenses and 5 percent toward administration costs.

Bennett said the kitchen always needs volunteers, and those interested can call 970-252-6415.
