Monument bridge to open soon

From left, Del DeRush and Howard Cook with G.A. Western Construction wait for vehicles to clear off of the road before they set the barriers on the new bridge on Monument Road. They expect the bridge to open at the end of the month

Construction on the bridge on Monument Road where it crosses the Redlands Water and Power Co. canal is near completion.

G.A. Western Construction of Palisade began the $800,000 project in early January and has a deadline of April 30.

The new bridge is wider and straighter than the old bridge and is designed to be safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

A curb, gutter and sidewalk have been added on the north side of the road from Brach Drive up to the bridge.

“It does look like it’s about done. It just has a couple of things left,” said Kristin Winn, spokeswoman for the city planning and public works department, adding it should be completed on time.

A sealant needs to be put on the road when the temperature stays above 60 degrees long enough, and the side railings need to be installed, Winn said.
