More people turn off TV
There was startling news this week: For the first time since Nielsen began keeping records in 1970, American television ownership is declining. It is expected to drop from 115 million homes with televisions this year to 114 million next year.
Once, that news might have been viewed as the stirrings of an intellectual awakening. Now, it likely has more to do with the state of the economy combined with other technological innovations.
With home computers and decent Internet service, as well as online offerings such as Netflix and Hulu, people can now stream numerous television programs live, or record them to be viewed later. A conventional television may no longer be necessary.
