Mother accused of giving pot to children
A 30-year-old Clifton mother is accused of smoking marijuana with her children and their friends, the youngest of which was a 9-year-old girl, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
Christina Marie Gordon, 3033 1/2 Choctaw Place, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of a felony charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, misdemeanor child abuse, and petty offenses of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger said further felony charges are pending because there are 10 listed juvenile victims in the case, ranging in age from 9 to 15. Gordon, who appeared in court Thursday, was prohibited from having contact with any children under 18, at least until the Department of Human Services is notified of the case.
According to an arrest affidavit, children who visited Gordon’s home described sitting around and smoking marijuana out of pipes and bongs. They said they fell asleep when the drug made them tired and were awakened in the early-morning hours by parties that were populated mostly by teenagers.
“(Children) … stated it was always going on, every time they were there. (Children) stated they were told not to tell anyone, but especially their parents,” according to an arrest affidavit.
One of the children told police that Gordon had said, “My only rule is not to tell your parents what goes on here.”
The issue came to light after the mother of a friend of one of Gordon’s children said she wouldn’t allow her child to visit the home anymore because of the “pot” smoking. Another mother began to protest, sticking up for Gordon as a great person, when her child chimed in and said, “Christina said pot wasn’t bad, and I could just smoke it, but not to tell you,” the affidavit said.
That mother spoke with her other children, who confirmed what the first child said. The mother then called police, who interviewed the children.
The children had varying degrees of knowledge about the drug, calling it “green, little shavings” and “doing that thing that looked like dead grass.” The children described the process of smoking through a bong, a pipe and a rolled cigarette, which they knew of as “a blunt.” They said smoking it made them “feel drowsy” and “trip over everything” and feel sick to their stomachs.
The mother of those children called Gordon to confront her, but she said Gordon accused her kids of lying, the affidavit said.
“Christina did not seem concerned at all,” the affidavit said.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for the home and executed it Wednesday.
They noticed two teenagers sitting on a couch and marijuana pipes on the kitchen table, “and there was a smell of marijuana coming from the house,” the affidavit said.
Deputies spoke to Gordon, who admitted she smokes marijuana and does not have a medical marijuana card and, when asked, she told deputies where they could find her marijuana stash.
“She stated she recently found out in the last month that (a son) and his friends have been smoking marijuana,” the affidavit said. “Christina said she doesn’t condone it, but she can’t stop it when she is not there.”
Gordon denied ever smoking marijuana with her children or their friends, the affidavit said.
After being questioned by deputies, the teenage boys in the house, “all told him that Christina knows about them smoking marijuana, does nothing to stop it and didn’t care when she came home and saw them with their marijuana pipes,” the affidavit said.
Deputies uncovered multiple marijuana pipes, bongs, other drug paraphernalia and small quantities of marijuana in the home, the affidavit said.
