Motorcycle crash kills one, injures another on I-70

Traffic was backed up on I-70 near mile marker 9 as St Mary’s CareFlight takes off with a victim of a motorcycle trike accident Sunday afternoon. Another victim died at the scene. Westbound traffic was eventually funneled into one lane past the accident while the Colorado State Patrol investigated.

One man died and another was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital following a single motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon on Interstate 70.

Two men, whose names were not released Sunday, were traveling west on a Harley Davidson tricycle-style motorcycle when it crashed at 2:38 p.m. Sunday at mile marker 9 on Interstate 70 between Mack and Loma. The driver was flown by CareFlight to St. Mary’s Hospital. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Heather Cobler said via email Sunday the motorcycle came off the left side of the road and rolled. Both men were thrown from the trike. Neither man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Law enforcement temporarily closed westbound lanes of the interstate at the crash site at 3 p.m. in order to allow CareFlight to land in westbound lanes to pick up one passenger. One westbound lane was open again within 45 minutes of closure, according to Cobler, and all lanes were open again by 5:30 p.m.
