Mr. JUCO gives tickets to kids
For the past ten years, Hilltop Community Resources has been putting a ticket to a Junior College World Series game into the hands of all Mesa County schoolchildren.
“This lets kids be a part of something that is big in our community,” said Mike Stahl, CEO of Hilltop, who was accompanied by the JUCO mascot, Mr. JUCO, to Holy Family School Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. JUCO gave tickets to Mrs. Leppink and Mrs. Farrington’s fifth-grade class. All of the school’s students, more than 400, were given a ticket to a morning game on either May 29 or May 30.
Hilltop will give more than 25,000 tickets to students across the valley, and in some outlying areas such as De Beque, in the next couple of weeks.
“This year may be most important to give the kids tickets because of the economy,” Stahl said, noting that an actual ticket was more effective in getting youth attendance than just letting the kids get in free.
The tickets are purchased annually through Hilltop’s general operating fund. The donation supports Hilltop’s mission to support all of the youth in the community, not just those who are clients.
“We just want kids to enjoy a bit of what makes Grand Junction special,” Stahl said.
