Murder charges filed against Clifton teen

A Clifton man was charged formally Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with an alleged gang-fueled, one-day crime spree that included a man’s slaying, two armed robberies and a residential burglary.

In a 16-count complaint filed by the Mesa County District Attorney’s office, Lester Miranda-Davis, 18, was charged under two separate legal theories of first-degree murder in connection with the July 16 death of 31-year-old Jorge Alberto Carrasco, who was gunned down in a shooting outside Taco Bell, 850 North Ave., which left two other people wounded.

In one first-degree murder charge, prosecutors allege Miranda-Davis acted after deliberation with intent to cause Carrasco’s death, according to charging documents.

In the second charge, prosecutors allege Miranda-Davis acted with an “attitude of universal malice manifesting extreme indifference” to human life.

A conviction on either charge carries a mandatory life sentence in prison for Miranda-Davis, who graduated in May from Central High School.

Prosecutors also filed four counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of theft, two counts of burglary, menacing, criminal trespass, as well as a sentence-enhancing crime-of-violence charge.

Authorities named four suspects in the July 16 spree. All are wanted on nearly identical charges, but police have not specified who among the four they believe fatally shot Carrasco. The Grand Junction Police Department said the crimes were gang-related, but it revealed little else as an investigation continues and arrest affidavits are sealed.

Two men, Jaime Cardenas, 19, and Fidel Silva, 24, both of East Palo Alto, Calif., remain at-large and are wanted in connection with the case.

Christian Fuentes, 20, also of East Palo Alto, was arrested in Fremont, Calif., on July 19 on suspicion of violating parole.

East Palo Alto police have said the three men are suspects in the slayings of two people July 13 and July 19.
