Neal to be sworn in on Board of Education

Former Grand Junction teacher and school board member Marcia Neal plans to dive into her job on the Colorado State Board of Education immediately after she is sworn in Tuesday.

“I intend to get as involved as I can as quickly as I can,” Neal said.

Neal, who was elected in November to represent the 3rd Congressional District, will have plenty to deal with on day one. The board has a full agenda to cover Wednesday at its first meeting of 2009.

Neal said there is nothing controversial on the agenda, but she plans to take the time to update herself on the progress of an education-standards overhaul the Legislature mandated last year.

“I’m very interested in that. … We will be talking about that,” Neal said.

The measure requires Colorado’s schools and colleges to align their standards and change how they assess students’ academic proficiency over a five-year period.
