Nearly a fifth of school out sick
About 100 kids either stayed home Friday from Orchard Mesa Middle School or left the school during the day because of an illness.
A stomach virus is going around the school, according to District 51 spokeswoman Christy McGee. She said similar illnesses have popped up at other schools this winter, but Friday’s mass exodus from the 530-student school was the largest this school year.
McGee said about 80 percent of the students out sick Friday were gone the whole day, and the rest went home at different points throughout the day because they weren’t feeling well.
“We want to remind parents we need them to help us keep kids home that extra day after kids stop showing symptoms to mitigate the spread of viruses,” McGee said.
McGee said the district also asks students and staff to wash their hands thoroughly to prevent spreading illnesses. Cleaning crews will perform extra cleaning over the weekend at Orchard Mesa Middle School.
