New 2-story REI store planned at 24 Road
Developers are expected to break ground later this year on a new commercial development along 24 Road north of Mesa Mall, including a new, two-story REI store.
Documents on file with the Grand Junction Public Works and Planning Department show the 75,000-square-foot Canyon View Marketplace could be anchored by a 27,000-square-foot REI store. The outdoor recreational equipment retailer has a smaller store at 644 North Ave.
The Grand Junction City Council earlier this month cleared what was perhaps the final hurdle for the project when it agreed to vacate an easement on the property.
The REI store would be one of four commercial buildings on the nearly nine-acre property at 649 Market Street, which is between 24 Road and Market Street west of Kohl’s department store and the Canyon View Stadium 14 movie theater.
City Senior Planner Scott Peterson said he expects developers to obtain a planning clearance in the next 30 days or so, which would allow them to begin construction.
Mark McPherson, project developer with Ascent Commercial Development Inc. of Topeka, Kan., declined to identify any potential tenants of Canyon View Marketplace but said he’s finalizing negotiations with several companies.
McPherson said he expects to announce several tenants by the end of next month.
Construction should begin sometime this summer, with the first business opening next year, he said.
