New airport board member sought

Mesa County will be represented on the Grand Junction Regional Airport Authority by someone other than one of the three county commissioners.

The commissioners considered having one of their number sit on the board, which has been beleaguered by an FBI investigation and the subsequent firing of airport Director of Aviation Rex Tippetts, but opted not to, Commissioner Rose Pugliese said.

“We thought it would be a good position for a member of the public,” Pugliese said Monday.

Grand Junction Mayor Sam Susuras is a member of the Airport Authority board.

The authority is a joint project of Mesa County and Grand Junction. Each appoints three members to the seven-member board. The board appoints a seventh member with the concurrence of the commission and council.

The commission hopes to have its representative in place for the next regular meeting of the Airport Authority in February. The deadline to apply is Jan. 17.

Information about how to apply for the county slot on the Airport Authority board is at http://www.mesacounty.us/administration/volunteer-openings.aspx or by calling 244-1885.

Denny Granum, the board’s previous representative on the board, resigned last week at the commission’s request.
