New charge for mom accused of sex assault
The Mesa County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday filed a new felony case against a Grand Junction mother already accused in a sexual affair with her son’s 15-year-old friend.
Wendy Crowell, 37, was formally charged Tuesday with one count of violating bail-bond conditions and obstructing a peace officer relating to a March 16 visit to her home by Grand Junction police officers. Crowell was the subject of a restraining order, prohibiting contact with any children under age 18, on March 16 when a neighbor in the 100 block of Buena Vista Drive reported Crowell was with her own children, ages 8 and 6, inside her home, according to an arrest affidavit.
The affidavit alleges Crowell tried to slip officers when they showed up.
“Crowell had fled the residence out the back with her children, climbed over a neighboring property fence, and hid next to a house,” an officer wrote in the affidavit. “When I contacted Crowell, she had both of her children with her.”
The officer ticketed Crowell for suspicion of violating a protection order.
The officer who handled the case on March 16 said he was unable to find any documentation about the no-contact provision with minors being a bond condition, according to the affidavit.
Weeks later, prosecutors pursued a felony case for the alleged bail-bond violation and an arrest warrant was issued May 14, according to court records. Crowell was arrested again May 27 and posted bond once again.
If convicted of violating bail-bond conditions, Crowell would be sentenced to a minimum mandatory one year in state prison.
Crowell was originally free on $10,000 bond after she was jailed Feb. 22 on suspicion of five counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, and five counts of sexual assault, after a Grand Junction police investigation found evidence Crowell had carried on a sexual relationship with her teenage son’s 15-year-old friend.
The alleged victim told his mother he had sexual intercourse with Crowell five times last summer, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
