New R-5, Fruita Monument principals hired
New principals have been assigned to R-5 and Fruita Monument high schools for the 2014-15 school year.
District 51 School Board members on Tuesday approved hiring Don Trujillo, expulsion intervention coordinator at The Opportunity Center, to replace Anna Goetz as principal of R-5 and hiring Fruita Monument High School Assistant Principal Todd McClaskey to replace Fruita Monument Principal Jan Keirns. Both Keirns and Goetz are leaving the district this summer.
McClaskey has worked at Fruita Monument since 2007 and served as assistant principal at Orchard Mesa Middle School for two years before that. He has worked in the district since 1997 and began teaching in 1993 in Washington state.
Trujillo was an assistant principal at Grand Mesa Middle School in 2004-05 and an assistant principal at Grand Junction High School from 2005 through 2009. Before that, he was a teacher and counselor at schools in Alamosa, Mosca and Trinidad between 1993 and 2004.
Goetz and Keirns are two of at least 11 administrators who plan to leave the district before the start of the coming school year. Others include Grand Mesa Middle School Principal Mark Vana and Rim Rock Elementary Principal Tami Kramer. District 51 Superintendent Steve Schultz told school board members at Tuesday’s meeting the district is working on hiring replacements for those positions.
“Don’t be surprised if every meeting we have for the next two months we bring more people to you” for administrative assignments, Schultz said.
