No charges in shooting of 7-year-old Clifton boy
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department will not charge anyone in connection with the accidental shooting of a 7-year-old boy by another child at a Clifton townhome, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said Friday.
The wounded boy, who was treated and released from Community Hospital with minor injuries on the same night of the incident, Dec. 27, was shot around 8 p.m. inside 3220 E. Hall Court, Unit G.
Deputies were called to respond to an accidental firearms discharge.
The Sheriff’s Department confirmed little else about the incident, citing the circumstance and the ages of the children involved.
The Daily Sentinel reported Dec. 28 that the owner of the rifle involved the incident — a Rascal .22 caliber single-shot Savage model — is Jennifer Williams, who lives at the East Hall Court residence.
According to a Sheriff’s Department inventory report, a single spent .22 caliber shell casing and similar bullet was found between the walls of Williams’ apartment and the unit next door.
A neighbor told the newspaper the units on either side of Williams’ were unoccupied at the time of the shooting.
