A 25-year-old Norwood man was killed Sunday in Afghanistan after his U.S. Army unit came under small-arms fire from insurgents, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Army Cpl. Aaron B. Cruttenden, along with Spc. Dale Kridlo, 33, of Hughestown, Pa., died from wounds suffered in the Kunar province of Afghanistan.

While a news release from Fort Bragg’s public affairs office identified Cruttenden as a resident of Mesa, Ariz., a death notice received by The Daily Sentinel this morning says he’s a resident of Norwood, with surviving parents and other family in Hotchkiss and Nucla. The soldiers were assigned to the 161st Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, according to the release.

Cruttenden enlisted in March 2008.

“Specialist Dale Kridlo and Corporal Aaron Cruttenden were outstanding soldiers who died fighting to protect their platoon and fellow soldiers,” Lt. Col. Alan Dodd, Cruttenden’s battalion commander, was quoted in a Fort Bragg news release.

“Although route clearance is an extremely dangerous and challenging mission for any soldier, it is because of the bravery of heroes such as Kridlo and Cruttenden that routes are safer from IEDs for both coalition forces and the Afghan people. They laid down their lives in the service of others and their sacrifice will not be forgotten in the 27th Engineer Battalion.”

Both men served as combat engineers during route clearance operations.

It was the first deployment for both men, as well.

Cruttenden will be promoted to the rank of sergeant, posthumously, the release said.
