Numerous exhibits spring up for First Friday art receptions, openings

Jacob Tahden sets up his piece “Contextual Hierarchy” in advance of the 2011 Mesa State College BFA Studio Art Candidates Exhibition, which opens with an art reception from 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 4, at The Art Center, 1803 N. Seventh St.

The first day of spring is just weeks away but art is already blooming at area galleries and First Friday art receptions and openings.

The Art Center’s First Friday art reception from 7–9 p.m. Friday, March 4, will feature opening exhibits as well as a continuing one. View the work of 12 studio art majors at the 2011 Mesa State College BFA Studio Art Candidates Exhibition.

Also on display will be the Rockies West National 2011 Juried Watercolor Exhibition and “What’s It All About” with the work of Joshua Butler, Charles Hardy and Roger McCoy.

A gallery talk concerning the watercolor show will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday. During the reception there will be a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. Morgann Means will provide the music. Call 243-7337 for information or go to

Paintings by Brooks Powell will be featured at an opening reception at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Planet Wines, 420 Main St.

The paintings will be on display through March. Call 424-5432 for information.

“Texture Junkies,” an exhibition of bronze sculptures by Colorado artists Alicia Hess, Caitlin Whitten and Tiffany Lee, will be featured at an opening reception from 6–8 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the Mesa State College Art Departments Art Gallery, at the College Center.

The sculptures will be on display through April 9. Call 248-1833 for information.

The Bighorn Gallery at Dead Horse State Park north of Moab, Utah, is the setting for a painting exhibit of Page Holland’s detailed landscapes and warm scenes of western life.

An opening reception is planned for 6:30–7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4. The exhibit will be on display through May 1.
