Obama venue opened to all, as space allows

Cross Orchards, which honors and preserves history, will become part of it today.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. at Cross Orchards Living History Farm.

The event originally was slated for ticket holders only, but demand prompted Obama’s campaign to open the venue to the public, said Colorado spokesman Matt Chandler.

Both Obama and Republican presidential nominee John McCain are pulling in large crowds during campaign stops since their respective national conventions and running mate announcements.

On Sunday night, volunteers and event planners were busy building bleachers and planning logistics as they transformed the gravel parking lot of Cross Orchards into a site for Obama’s speech.

Those who have tickets are guaranteed a spot inside Cross Orchards. A special spot will be blocked off for ticket-holders. Limited parking for ticket holders will be available in a grass pasture on the property. There will be no parking on the gravel lots inside the gates.

Everyone wanting to get inside the Cross Orchard gates will have to go in through one entrance off F Road. The public will go through security similar to an airport, Chandler said.

Bottled water and cameras will be allowed, but signs, banners, posters and large bags are prohibited.

The general public without tickets will be allowed in as space allows. Gates open at 9 a.m.

Using carpools or public transportation is encouraged, according to the Obama campaign and the Grand Junction Police Department.

Sgt. David Stassen said people parking illegally on the streets will be towed. The area surrounding Cross Orchards is largely residential.

F Road has numerous Grand Valley Transit bus stops. People can park at Mesa Mall and take the bus from there, GVT officials said. The bus ride from the mall to Cross Orchards should take approximately 30 minutes.
