Off-duty cop arrests sex offender in audience of kids’ Christmas event

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department says it has arrested sex offender John Joseph Kerby, who was wanted for failure to register.

According to police, an off-duty deputy spotted Kerby at a location in the 3000 block of E ½ Road, Grand Junction. The deputy apparently was there for a child’s Christmas program when he spotted Kerby in the audience. 

Kerby’s original charge of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, a class 3 Felony, requires him to register as a sex offender annually.
