One dead after dump truck runs stop sign, hits vehicle

A Grand Junction police officer sets out cones at the scene of a fatal accident involving a dump truck and a Nissan at 23 and G Roads around dusk.

One person is dead after a dump truck ran a stop sign and collided with a Nissan sport utility vehicle at the intersection of 23 and G roads early Thursday evening.

The accident happened around 5:15 p.m. The Nissan SUV was northbound on 23 Road, and the dump truck was headed west on G Road. The dump truck failed to stop at the stop sign and struck the Nissan SUV, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Porras said.

Both vehicles came to rest on their sides near the northwest corner of the intersection. There were two people in the dump truck and one person in the SUV.

Police did not release the name of the person who died and declined to say which vehicle the person was in.

One person went to the hospital by private vehicle, and another was treated for minor injuries at the scene, Porras said.

The intersection has a history of serious accidents, and Porras said, “I know that this is a road our traffic officers monitor frequently.”

She said officers target speeding and the running of stop signs in particular.
