Online sales to keep business going after college class

PHOTO BY CHRISTOPHER TOMLINSON—Mesa State College student Amber Ruch created a crafts, assessories and clothing business called Altered by Amber for a class at Mesa St and then kept it going out of her apartment.Art to go with Emily’s story.Sent as ALTERED BY AMBER 11-23.

Like many college students, Amber Rich spends a lot of her time on Facebook.

Unlike many of her peers, though, she’s on the site to drum up business.

Rich, 22, started selling rings, vintage clothes and altered clothes with touches such as rhinestones and faux flowers in September. She connects to customers on her Facebook fan page and has online shops on eBay, craigslist and Etsy, an online store for handmade items.

Altered by Amber started as a project for Rich’s small business management course at Mesa State College. Some other students chose to write a thick paper, but she opted to spend the semester running a business.

The class will end in December, yet Rich said she hopes to keep her business going on and off in the years to come.

Her next step is to graduate in May and attend graduate school in the fall, but she’d like to sell accessories and clothes after she gets her master’s degree, even if it’s on the side.

“I don’t think I could make a living off it, but it’s something I want to keep doing,” Rich said.

Rich’s designs are “girly” and mostly involve vintage styles with a special touch and rings with a variety of objects attached to them, from a tiny plastic television to a slice of a colorful stone.

Rich has shipped her designs to the Middle East, China, Denmark, North Carolina and to friends in town and in her hometown in Wyoming.

Prices range from $6 to $15 for rings and from $15 to $40 for clothing.
